San Marcos, Revolution in Clay
Stories of Clay, Culture, and Change with Eric Mindling

ilmed on location in the Zapotec village of San Marcos Tlapazola in Oaxaca, Mexico, San Marcos, Revolution in Clay follows two traditional potters, Alberta Mateo S. and Macrina Mateo M., through their ancestral pottery making process from digging clay to a highly unusual forming method, through slipping and burnishing to a final tumble-stack surface firing. These potters are the inheritors of a trade that has been passed down from mother to daughter in their village for four thousand years. But in the last forty years products made from plastic and tin threaten to make this rural pottery obsolete. Faced with losing their livelihood, these two potters have begun to look for solutions. As we see them create their fine pottery we also learn what they are doing to face the challenges of a fast changing future.
