Masks of Michoacan . . .
Dates Pending for 2008/09
(printer-friendly version)

We visit master mask carvers at work and experience the color and dances of the Purepecha Candelaria festival

One of the most fascinating forms of folk art in Mexico is mask carving. There exists a tremendous diversity of mask styles and ceremonial dances that go together with the masks. Each one tells a story. The Purepecha highlands of Michoacan are one of the important centers of mask carving and traditional dancing in Mexico. This trip is an exploration of these carving traditions and the dances associated with it. We will travel from village to village to meet important carvers and through them and our guide learn about the carvings and masked stories in these towns. We’ll also witness performances of different dances, in some cases specially arranged for our visit.
